BOONVILLE — Warrick County voters may see more options for early voting next year.

The Warrick County Election Board is considering adding early voting locations instead of having a single location to vote early — which in the past has been the Election Office at the Judicial Center.

“I suggested at our meeting (last week) to move early voting to another location,” said Patty Perry, Warrick County clerk and Election Board secretary. “We are currently looking at libraries or anywhere that might have internet access.”

About 26 percent, or almost 8,000 voters, sent in an absentee ballot or visited the Election Office to vote early in 2016. Perry said some people told her they waited an hour-and-a-half or longer to vote early.

Perry hopes to find a location for early voting at each municipality in Warrick County.

Vanderburgh County allows people to vote early at various locations — including at least one week at several libraries.

“So we’re going to try to spread it out so that everyone is covered and we don’t discriminate just (a single location),” Perry said.

Perry doesn’t expect 2018’s election turnout to be as high as 2016, but she thinks this does help the county prepare for the 2020 election.

In 2008 presidential election, the Election Board had one satellite early voting location at the Ohio Township Library at Bell Road. That year had one of the highest early voting turnouts, with more than 10,000 people casting pre-Election-Day ballots.

“We’re hopeful, but I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up on it because we don’t know the cost is going to be on that,” Perry said. “But I think we seriously need to look at this.”

Perry said she and some of her deputy clerks plan to scout some of the locations before the next Election Board meeting in June.

“The Election Board wants to make it easier for the voters out there so they can get out and vote,” Perry said. “(Voting is) very important and the easier we can make it, the better things are going to go.”
